Within the reporting period activities in all work packages were sustained.
The degradation behaviour of the cells was further investigated. It was ascertained that the higher the depth of discharge, the earlier a nonlinear aging behavior will emerge. It is furthermore the charge cutoff voltage which is presumably responsible for the more fasten degradation of cells. Tests have shown that there is definitely the possibility for mitigation by lowering the load at a certain cell’s state of health. Analysis show good accordance from in-field degraded cells to laboratory cells.
Related to the 2nd life solutions it was identified that the smallest level for an exchange of single units is a modular one since no bigger variation in the single cells’ parameters could be detected in the aged modules.
The activities in the Recycling solution work package lead to the identification and characterization of the components in different types of Li-ion battery packs and cells as well as their contents and individual economic values. A flow sheet of a recycling process for Li-Ion-batteries from EV, a strategy to determine the state of charge of battery cells and a method for discharging the cells were developed. Customers for the different products of the recycling process in dependency of their purity were identified.
For the business models of 2nd Life and recycling solutions for the batteries a reference scenario “Electric Vehicle Use (1 Use) + Home Energy Management Storage (2 Use)” was finalized and implemented in Gabi Software.
Theoretical results about the advantages and limitations of coupling were gained. Basics for the built-up of a small scale pilot plant were accomplished.
Dissemination activities started (conference participation) communication tools were provided. Communication, reporting and regular general assemblies were performed.
