Interview with Eric Gross: Design of the vehicle cabin

20/10/2010

Eric Gross« The range of possibilities for urban mobility is still very large! »

Nearly a month before Mobilis, Eric Gross, the program director of the Pôle Vehicule du Future, informs us about the interior design of vehicles. Theme which is precisely the subject of a workshop this year.

Would you mind introducing yourself?

I have been working at the Pôle Vehicule du Future for nearly three years. I hold the position of program director. I spend part of my time on a daily basis, on developing the international network of the Pôle. I also focus my attention on engineering and industrial processes. I trained as an engineer and as a designer. Before beeing an engineer, I've worked for several years in a designer office. So, I have a good knowledge of this area, as well as of the people working in it. But overall, I know the needs of the automotive market.

What is the interior design of the vehicle and why do you talk about it today?

The interior of a vehicle affects ergonomics, choice of materials and interior styling, be it a car, a tram, a plane or a train.
Talking about this topic today, and at Mobilis also, is a choice linked to the combination of a personal feeling and the fact that this issue is more and more with us nowadays.

In which regards is the interior design of the vehicle a trendy topic?

The interior design has become one of the prime buying factors. It is very important after the vehicle design. It is therefore important to know and to do things in this area.

Does the Pôle have approved projects planned in this area?

In recent years we have developed the program Décaut'ex on these topics. This creates a dynamic in our region. Furthermore, we have in the regions Alsace / Franche-Comte, about 80 companies active in this field: Protechnic, Delphi ...
In this context, we realised that the regions suffered from a lack of training in this field. We have therefore taken the initiative, together with the UHA, the CCI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry) of Mulhouse SUD ALSACE and the Domus Academy, to create The School of Design. This initiative is brillantly supported by the CCI that will set up the project by early 2011. A technical component will be taught by UHA, and the creative side by Domus Academy.

What audience do you expect at this workshop during Mobilis?

The goal of the workshop is to lead a global reflexion on the whole issue. We are targeting a wide range of profiles : academics, sociologists, ergonomists, designers, architects ... But also people coming from the automotive industry who want to know what the trend is.

The interior design theme is regularly discussed at Mobilis. How is the 2010’s workshop going to be different?

The difference will be related to the speakers, and particularly Amko Leenarts, Vehicle Interior Designer at PSA. The workshop will thus be guided by Peugeot’s vision of Interior vehicle’s design, with interactive discussion.

You will be attending Mobilis for the third time. What conclusions can you draw?

I am mostly concerned by the, still very large, range of possibilities in terms of urban mobility. And this dynamic involves various skills.
